How to Read a Label Properly
The 1st step of proper label reading is examining the ingredient list. Read the ingredients first and ignore all the claims. Here are some basic rules of thumb:
- If the list of ingredients is too long or impossible to pronounce, do not buy.
- Make sure the first few ingredients are the bulk of the food product.
- Make sure sugar is not one of the top three ingredients.
- When reading ingredients, stay away from hydrogenated oils, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and additives.
- Why do some people need to supplement with Probiotics?
- I'll try to make this simple for you. If you ever go on antibiotics, whatever the reason may be, it is absolutely essential to supplement with probiotics after the treatment to replenish all the good bacteria that were killed. This will help prevent the common yeast infections and bowel disruptions from antibiotics use. I usually recommend supplementation for at least 1 month after antibiotics.
- If my clients do not consume yogurt on a regular basis, I usually recommend a low dose probiotic supplement everyday. Probiotics are like a multi-vitamin for our digestive tract. Also, sugary and processed foods feed all the bad bacteria in our digestive tract. A few studies have shown that obese people have a more bad bacteria and less good bacteria. So if your diet is filled with sugars and processed foods, it is essential to supplement with probiotics as well.
